Hill: Carn Daimh
Type: Sub2k
Height: 570m
It has been a while since I added a Sub2k to my list but with the good lady in tow it was not going to be anything higher today.
A fine day was forecast but it started extremely grey and cool as we enjoyed a good breakfast roll in a local café before saying goodbye to son number 1, his holiday was over, his choice lol.
Carn Daimh is a moorland hill in the beautiful Glenlivet estate and can be ascended as a spur off the Speyside Way. We did it from Tomnavoulin starting from Clash wood and the sun was out.
A delightful woodland track, sunlit and shaded to start the walk before opening out onto farmland.Where we waited as the shepherd was moving about 100 sheep. Always a good watch as the dogs do there stuff. He wasn't best pleased when we told him he had left one behind. |

Open fields coos out of camera on left |
The track then climbs steadily through fields of livestock, cattle and sheep heading for the next wooded section. A wee breather to look back over Ben Rinnes. |
great specimen |
If you are into your fungi this wooded section was stacked full of them, but very dangerous if you don't know your mushrooms. It would be nice to go out with an expert I don't think learning from books is the wisest. |
Out of woodes Ben Rinnes on right |
The wooded track twists and turns, dips and rises and joins the Speyside Way. Lots of flies buzzing about so relief to break out onto the moor. |
Summit in sight |
A short high level stroll taking in the magnificent views. As well as Ben Rinnes there is the other Corbett Corriehabbie. |
Great to see the good lady on a top |
On your left the skyline is the eastern cairngorms from the tors of Ben Avon along the range to Derry Cairngorm. Throw in the Cromdales and the Glenlivit scenery a fabulous viewpoint for little effort. A viewfinder helps to confirm what you are looking at. |
Cross the open moor in the direction of Rinnes |
From the cairn we initially descended following the Speyside Way track, continuing beyond the short cut of the Smugglers Trail. There is an option to descend back to the farm and meet up with your outward route.Once off the Speyside Way it is proper moorland. A faint track is found through the heather along with cow tracks but we never did see them. |
Heading round middle trees to descend back to start |
Contouring the flanks towards another plantation is no hardship as the the views down to Tomnavoulin and the Glenlivit countryside are spectacular. The weather was glorious, an ideal summers day, and a short walk to remember. Once again a wee Sub2k delivers the goods. An excellent short ramble.
