Hill: The Eildon Hills Circuit
Type: Sub2k
Height: n/a
Another visit to more Iron Age hill forts in the Borders as well as being the site of a great Roman camp 'Trimontium'. A circuit of the 3 Eildon Hills where two out of the three are hill fort locations but surprisingly, Mid Hill the highest, is not one of them. However, when you stand at the summit of the smallest, South Eildon, it is apparant what a fantastic viewpoint it is, easily spotting movement on the flatlands below, weather permitting.
Although it was a good ramble the wind was ferocious at the tops. The gusts were catching my rucksack and trying to turn me. So fierce that on the highest, Mid Eildon, I had to grab the trig to stabalise the situation. Not hanging about.
It was a walk I had meant to do for ages and glad I did it. Straightforward route from Melrose. Bit muddy at times. Surprised at how the earth was red clay. Only disappointment was that all the snow had melted away.
The right track is the route. Close up the left is more like slippage |
