White Meldon

Hill: White Meldon

Type: Sub2k

Height: 427m

A double hill outing today starting with White Meldon. When I was planning the walk I was surprised at how many historic iron age forts and settlements are situated around here. Throw in a Roman Camp this is a historically fascinating area.

On the walk I was expecting much more snow than I encountered. On the lower slopes there was plenty in the heather landscape. Sometimes going knee deep. The good thing about a covering of snow is that it shows up tracks or ways that might not have been obvious. The curious part of todays walk was the snow disappearing the higher I walked, a new one for me.

Just after the start a large mound indicates the location of the lower settlement. Higher up the amount of rocks and the rounded landscape show the defensive outriders of the ancient fort. It is apparently the largest hill fort in the Tweed valley. The location of 29 round houses has been confirmed but aerial photography suggests many more, a thriving community indeed.

Just a short ramble but a good one to stand there at the summit and let the imagination run wild. The views are pretty dammed good as well.

There are excellent views across to its its slightly lower twin, Black Meldon, which also hosts a fort at its summit. If I hadnt been going on to my other hill i would have done this as well. One for another day when passing by.
